Are you a pure Central New Yorker? Either you were born and raised here, or maybe moved here, you're a pure Central New Yorker.  If you do some traveling outside of the area and mention certain phrases unique to our area, you may get some blank or even dirty looks.

Utica and Rome are just like any city or town; we have our own lingo. Here's a few phrases that would truly raise eyebrows outside of Central New York, or raise eyebrows to new residents.

1) "Do you have any turkey joints?"

Listen, we aren't smoking turkey drugs. We are using turkey in any terrible way. Turkey Joints don't even have actual turkey in them! They are truly delicious, and a treasure to our area.

2) "Let's get some riggies!"

What are riggies? Are they a disease? Do I have the riggies? Riggies are rigatoni pasta. The treasured dish of Utica is Chicken Riggies.

3) "It's Boilermaker Weekend."

Does this place have a city dedicated to the craftsmen that design boilers? Well, maybe....not what we are talking about though. In 1978, the Boilermaker began as a 15K road race with 876 runners. Today it is a week long extravaganza drawing thousands from all over the world. Celebrate Boilermaker weekend with friends and family.

4) "Want to grab a tomato pie?"

Are people eating an apple pie where the apples are tomato? Is it a big bowl of sauce? Actually, neither. It's a CNY "version" of pizza that isn't baked.

5) "Barn Fest is almost here."

Is this a heavy metal concert for farmers? No. Is this a festival celebrating barns? No. Is this one of the largest craft/antique shows in the state? Yes. You can shop till you drop at the Remsen Barn Fest each and every fall.
