Despite being the area code that serves New York's capitol, the governor hasn't signed any proclamations making May 18 a holiday in honor of the 518 area code, but that hasn't stopped some from noting the occasion.

Here are some fascinating facts about the 518 area code:

• The 518 Area Code is the largest in New York state by area covering a region stretching from the eastern Mohawk Valley through the capitol district to the Vermont border and north to Canada. In addition to the Albany area, cities like Plattsburgh and Glens Falls are in the 518.
• When the area code system was first developed in 1947, 518 was one of the original 5 area codes assigned to New York.
• 518 is the only area code in New York that has never been split into two or had another area code laid over it.
