The 315 area code that has served Central New York for decades has finally started tor run out of numbers. So our area has to face something most other areas of the country already have - a change in area code. I, for one, welcome our new 680 overlords.

There were two options that New York State could have chosen. One was a split in the region. Perhaps Utica and Syracuse would have had different area codes. In that instance, the area forced to give up their original area code seems to somehow feels that they got the shaft and were less favored then the area keeping the original digits.

That's not, however, what was chosen for the 315 area code. We'll be given what called an overlay, meaning that new numbers will be assigned the new area code, 680.

You get to keep your 315, but you'll always need to dial the area code to complete your call.

According to our news-gathering partner WIBX, new numbers with 680 will begin to be issued in 2017.
