When I was in junior high school I was sent to the principle's office for a paddling. It still stings today. I don't remember what I did to deserve a whack on the butt but I do remember that I thought it was excessive punishment for kids. Now, a 63-year-old elementary school teacher in the San Antonio Texas has been arrested and charged with knowingly causing injury to a child, a third-degree felony.

The Inquisitor reports that;

According to the arrest warrant, Karl Nicholas was arrested for slapping a 9-year-old-student who was allegedly acting up. The teacher has been put on administrative leave from Stewart Elementary School pending the results of the criminal investigation. Mr, Nicholas admitted to the principal, after other students were interviewed, that he slapped a disruptive 9-year-old student in his third-grade class.

Apparently the child's mother is very upset and the state of Texas agrees with her calling the incident a violation of a the Texas state penal code, statute 12.34.

Where was this when I was a kid? Some say, "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Others say, leave the corporal punishment up to the parents...only. What do you say? Is it ever okay for a teacher to spank a child?
