That's right, scientists have discovered a natural nuclear reactor in the Earth's crust in Gabon, Africa.

The area is a natural nuclear reactor - an area of concentrated uranium with the conditions just right for a nuclear reaction.

According to IFLScience.com, scientists first discovered the area in 1972 when uranium ore from the area was tested for uranium content.

Research revealed that over two billion years ago conditions were just right for the uranium to undergo nuclear fission and cause a chain reaction that actually produced nuclear power.

Sadly - or thankfully -  the uranium levels necessary for the area to continue to produce nuclear reactions are too low, but there is still proof that the area once did what scientists first did in 1951 - produce a nuclear reaction that resulted in power generation.

Billions of years before human scientists even knew it was possible.
