Central New York was the place, and Deerfield was the exact spot over the weekend as volunteer fire departments from around New York competed Saturday in the annual New York State Motorized Firematics Championship Drill.

Over 40 volunteer fire departments took part in Deerfield on Saturday. Teams competed in eight different events, such as motor pump, buckets, and ladder skills.

The firematics competition has historical roots, as many of the skills tested are the very ones that are crucial to the work that firefighters do every day. The competition includes physical conditioning, hose skills, teamwork, and other essential qualities.

It can also be a good recruiting tool for the volunteer fire departments to beef up their numbers of enlistees, which have recently dwindled.

The results of the 2018 competition are right here.
