Central New York Veggies: First Sweet Corn of the Season

Everyone loves eating the freshest “seasonal” vegetables. But it’s even better when you can get locally grown veggies at the peak of freshness. So where can you get local, homegrown sweet corn?

We’ve been seeing fresh corn in area grocery stores, but most of it is still being shipped up from Pennsylvania farms. Back in June, Syracuse.com reported that the rainy and cold weather we had this spring was likely going to delay the local corn harvest. According to a Facebook post, Wagner Farms in Rome claims to be the first in our area to start picking corn on July 19th. Candella’s Farm and Greenhouse in Marcy says they have homegrown sweet corn available in their stand. Juliano Farms in Schuyler also has their own, along with Tassleberry Farm in Westmoreland, Capanna Farms on River Rd in Floyd, Skeeterboro Farms on Route 233 in Rome/Westmoreland, and many other local farms.

Savicki’s Farm Market on Route 12 in Clinton says they’ll have their first batch of sweet corn ready very soon. Their Facebook page says that they begin picking this Wednesday (8/2/17) so hopefully you’ll be able to find it in their market later this week. What kind of corn is it? They say it’s “butter and sugar” sweet corn:

The yellow and white mix is called butter and sugar. We love it for it’s sweet taste and tender kernels. We are planning to pick on Wednesday (8/2)! We also grow sweet corn with kernels that are all white. Some call it silver queen. That will be ready in a couple weeks. (Savicki’s Farm Market via Facebook)

Savicki’s also has their own beans, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, plus they are just finishing up their season of sweet peas and sugar snap peas. They also do something unique – hydroponic strawberry farming. That means they’re still picking fresh strawberries and will continue to do so until the first frost.

Now, back to the topic at hand – healthy and delicious local sweet corn. Whether you boil it or throw it on the grill with the rest of your feast, for the next few weeks we will have the freshest and sweetest corn available in our own backyards.
