Their website says they were the very first supermarket in the United States.  That same Utica grocery store has now been voted the "Best small supermarket in Central New York."   Chanatry's Hometown Market on French Road won a poll by readers of Syracuse.com.

Chanatry's originally opened on Utica's Bleecker Street in 1912.  In 1938, they built a new, larger store called the "Super Food Market," and thus became the first supermarket in America.

According to chanatrys.com, their current store is about 46,000 square feet.  They are locally owned and their slogan is "Where your money goes the farthest but still stays home."

In the website poll, Chanatry's garnered over 1700 votes, while the runner-up, a grocery store in Liverpool, received under 1500 votes.
