More snack and granola products with sunflower seeds in Quaker Oats, Planters and Clif Bar brands are being recalled across the U.S. and Canada because of potential Listeria contamination as production resumes at the SunOpta Inc. plant responsible for the recalls.

The recalled seeds and kernels are found in trail mixes, salads, yogurt, and more. The potential for contamination was noted after notification from the sunflower seed supplier SunOpta about positive Listeria monocytogenes results.

This recall was enormous to begin with on May 3, and now it's been expanded several times. So many various products being recalled makes it tough to know what is safe and not safe. Here is a partial list from the FDA.

New and expanded recalls posted yesterday and today from Food Safety News include:

Brands included in SunOpta’s expanded recall include:

  • Sunrich Naturals;
  • Spitz, available only in Canada;
  • Kar’s;
  • Planters; and
  • Navitas Naturals.

SunOpta expanded its voluntary recall of a limited number of sunflower kernel products that have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
