Mother Nature gave us 2 opportunities for the 'pot of gold' after the thunderstorms moved through. This isn't the first time I've seen a double rainbow in Herkimer County. Could you ever get sick of this view off your porch? Is there a magical meaning to a double rainbow?

According to Soul Wise Living: The first rainbow represents the material and the second the spiritual. It’s meant to help us align both our outer world with our inner spirit.

“In Chinese culture red is symbolic of the feet and violet represents the head. So a Primary Rainbow can be seen to illustrate a human descending from heaven. As stated before, the secondary arc in a Double Rainbow has reversed colors so, since the red is on the bottom and the violet is on top, the human figure is ascending from the material earth to the spiritual heaven. Therefore seeing a Double Rainbow is considered a very auspicious occasion and a reason for reflection and meditation.”

How does a double rainbow happen? The Weather Channel says all rainbows require the presence of the sun and rain in order to form. In order to see a rainbow, the sun must be to the viewer's back, and rain must be falling ahead of the viewer. It doesn't necessarily have to be raining on or near the viewer, but rain must be present ahead of the viewer towards the horizon.

As sunshine breaks through the clouds and beams towards the raindrops, some of the light encounters the raindrops and bends - this process is called refraction. When the light refracts, the process causes the sunlight to separate into different wavelengths. These different wavelengths correspond to different colors: red and orange correspond to longer wavelengths, while blue and purple correspond to shorter wavelengths.

The Weather Channel goes on to say During a particularly lucky scenario, two rainbows will form at the same time. The first and brighter rainbow is called the primary rainbow. This rainbow is created by the process described above, and only requires the light to reflect off of the raindrop once before refracting out of the raindrop.

Here is the beautiful sight after the thunder storms. As you click through you can actually see the second rainbow emerging as I'm taking pictures.

Let's not forget the most famous viewing of a double rainbow.
