Lady Gaga made a huge reveal in her interview with The Sun, the only press she did ahead of her iTunes Wireless Festival performance, set for today, Sept. 1. She clarified that she is no longer in it for the fame (no, not ‘The Fame’), and while she had mastered the art of fame, she is more interested in the applause of her fans. She also talked about her deep love for Elton John and gushed about her new pals in One Direction.

“When I had surgery I really missed being on stage and I have missed the applause,” she explained. “That is an incredible feeling, knowing the audience is happy. When I have done that, that’s when I am happiest. I haven’t missed the fame or attention with all the rest of it. I really enjoyed the downtime because it rejuvenated my creativity and I figured a lot about myself in the past year.”

She furthered, “I realized I am not in it for the fame. I don’t need to go out and be recognized to feel alive. I do miss being onstage singing, and dancing, but didn’t miss getting dressed up. I still got dressed up, I just did it in my apartment, I did that for just me.”

So Gaga has made the leap from loving fame to loving her fans more. That’s a big jump for her, for sure.

She spoke of her friend Elton John, saying, “I love him in such a deep way. His boys are so beautiful, it’s a privilege to be their godmother.”

Ma Monster also dished on 1D, saying she has a problem that all Directioners have, admitting, “I can’t put the One Direction boys in order of my favorites, they are all equally cute in my book.” We totally get it. It’s hard to pick a cutest member of 1D.

She finished, “Those boys are very special indeed, they are down to earth. I met them at the VMAs and they are really nice guys. They are totally in it for the right reasons and I love to see that.”

Ma Monster also addressed the global hot topic of conversation – Miley Cyrus at the VMAs. She was kind and gentle, and she contextualized the event, saying, “I don’t like to pass judgment on Miley. Generally, people need to lighten up about pop music. It’s about entertainment. It is here to make people happy. Especially in America, there is an excessive dragging of female artists and I don’t want to contribute to that. I do things that are polarizing sometimes, but that’s what it’s all about.”
