The Morrisville State College Theatre Department presents CRIMES OF THE HEART on October 20, 21, at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the door. General Admission is $8 and $3 for students.

 

October 22 at 2 p.m., then October 26, 27, and 28 at 8 p.m.

Henley was the winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. CRIMES OF THE HEART, the 1986 movie based on the play, received three Academy nominations.

Henley’s three-act play takes place in the fall five years after Hurricane Camille in the kitchen of the Magrath sisters. They reunite to await news of their grandfather. He is spending his last hours in the hospital. While waiting to hear of their grandfather, these sisters have their own troubles. The oldest sister, Lenny, is 30 years old and unmarried. The chances of getting married get slimmer. Her sister, Meg, returned to Hazelhurst after having a failed singing career on the West Coast. Babe Botrelle, the youngest, is out on bail after she shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not fall in love with her.
