Being a firefighter was in Rob Urtz III's blood, but so was cancer and after battling fires for 20 years, he lost his courageous cancer battle March 31st. The Lt from the Verona volunteer firefighter was remembered as several fire departments lined the streets to say their final goodbyes Monday, April 6th.

Urtz was a member of the Verona fire Department since 1995 and was named Oneida County Firefighter of the Year in 2005. He could often be found at the fire station with his two boys Jackson and Carter. When he wasn't at the station, he cherished the time he spent casting a rod and reel with his boys or teaching them how to swing a golf club.

One final alarm was sounded for Urtz as firefighters stood by to mourn the loss

Rob's family is grateful for all the acts of kindness shown to them during his illness. The outpouring of love and support at the recent benefit for Rob, put on by the Verona Fire Department, was overwhelming. Rob loved to help friends and loved ones. In the spirit of his giving nature, the best thing you could do in his memory is to get a colonoscopy and urge your loved ones to do so also.
