GwynethPaltrow

There are lots of ways to save a life. You can donate blood, volunteer at an animal shelter or, apparently, almost run someone over as she’s on her way to certain doom.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Lara Lundstrom Clarke jaywalked across a New York street as she was rushing to catch a train to her job in the Twin Towers — and the motorist who slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting her was none other than actress-cum-email newsletter wantrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow.

The incident caused Clarke to miss her train, and by then, the first hijacked plane had crashed into the World Trade Center building where she worked. She lost four colleagues that day, and credits Paltrow for saving her life.

Paltrow’s publicist confirmed the story and said the Oscar-winner was “deeply moved” by Clarke’s account.

It might be more accurate to say walking out in front of a car whose driver was paying attention was actually Clarke’s saving grace, but who are we to quibble? She narrowly avoided death twice that fateful morning. Hope her guardian angel put in for hazard pay.
