Nestled in the heart of downtown Syracuse lies one of the most interesting historic buildings with some unexpected ghosts.

Prior to the formation of New York’s Thruway system, the easiest way for goods to be moved from Albany to Buffalo was through the Erie Canal System. The canal traveled through a series of locks, each of which was designed to change altitude, or to weigh the loads that the canal boats carried.

Over the years, all of these buildings, known as Weighlocks were demolished. Currently, the only Weighlock remaining in the United States is the Weighlock Building in Syracuse.

After the Erie Canal fell into disuse, the Weighlock Building was occupied by the Department of Public Works, and was filled with architects responsible for developing the city of Syracuse. The building was sold to the NYS Department of Education after it was discovered that the building was slated for destruction so that a highway could be constructed. The building has been restored, and is now utilized as a museum dedicated to life on the Erie Canal, as well as Syracuse history.

A good portion of museums tend to be haunted, mostly because they contain large collections of historic artifacts, and are dedicated to the sort of events that may be compelling to spirits. The Erie Canal Museum appears to be an example of this. There have been reports of hearing voices, footsteps, other strange noises, as well as strangely moving shadows.
