Some firefighters were slightly injured and the Poland Fire Department's rescue truck was destroyed in a weekend fire at the village's fire station.  Another fire engine was damaged by the blaze, and other equipment suffered heavy smoke damage.

The fire was discovered when firefighters were called to the Case Street firehouse after a report of wires down.  When they arrived, the building was filled with smoke, and a call was placed to the Herkimer County 911.

Fire fighters from neighboring Newport responded and the fire was quickly put out.  It was determined the blaze started in the rescue truck.  The vehicle was completely destroyed, and another fire truck heavily damaged.  Three other trucks suffered smoke damage but have been cleaned and are expected back in service today.

Five Poland firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.  The Herkimer Times Telegram reports that a fire in 1976 completely destroyed Poland's fire station.
