His Real Birthdate And Other Interesting George Washington Facts
How much do you know about our first president? In honor of President’s Day, I found some fun facts about Washington. For instance, his real birthday isn’t February 11th. Did you know that? These facts are courtesy of biography.com.
1. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 but the date was moved back eleven days to February 11th when the new nation adopted the Gregorian calendar.
2. George Washington’s favorite breakfast meal was hoecakes. Today we’d call them cornmeal pancakes. They typically were served with honey and butter.
3. He was called “General” by everyone. Even his wife Martha called him “General” in public. What did she call him in private? We’ll never know. After he died, she burned their letters.
4. He built a state of the art distillery at Mount Vernon, which made peach and apple brandy and also rye whiskey. Washington was one of the most successful liquor distributor’s in the early days of America. In recent years, his distillery was restored and is now open to the public.
