Jennifer Lopez on Post-Partum Depression: ‘I’m Being Misquoted in the Press’

Jennifer Lopez is setting the record straight about the rumors that she suffered post-partum depression after birthing her twins Max and Emme back in February of 2008.

The singer admitted to a short bout with baby blues a week after their arrival and the media ran with those statements, saying she suffered from full-on PPD. La Lopez told Ellen DeGeneres (quotes via E!) on her namesake show that she is being misquoted in the press regarding this matter.

“I know I’m being misquoted in the press a lot,” she said. “I had depression when I had the babies? None of that’s true … I had what they called the baby blues, which is when your hormones drop and you get very emotional.”

The quotes in question appeared in her Redbook feature, where she said “I remember after the babies were born, about seven to 10 days in, I was like, ‘What is going on with me?’ I felt sad and depressed and thought the babies didn’t love me.”

The singer / actress / designer / ‘American Idol’ judge was responding to a question and admitted that she was reading the book ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting.’ She appears in the film version, which drops at the multiplex this Friday.

She continued, “Then I read the book — and it was like on that day, I counted…when your hormones drop and you get very emotional. They’re like, ‘You might be feeling very emotional today…’ I said, ‘Yes, I am, that’s what’s happening to me, right now.’”

That’s when the press ran away with the stories.

So J. Lo did not sink into a deep, dark place upon giving birth. She dealt with a very normal emotional and physical reaction to a major life event.

Lopez also addressed her tenure on ‘Idol,’ too. While admitting “I enjoy it, I really do enjoy it,” she did confess that the daily grind and time commitment are wearing her down and she intimated that it may be time to move on. She continued, “This is my second year. I don’t know if I can go for a third year. I miss doing other things. It really does lock you down.”

Don’t fret, ‘Idol’ watchers. Lopez said the same thing last year, when her debut season wrapped. So there is hope.
