John Legend is going underground. Well, not actually. The R&B piano man has been tapped to play abolitionist Frederick Douglass in the WGN America series, Underground.

Legend, who also serves as executive producer of the slavery-based series, will make a cameo as Douglass but it’s unknown if he will be a recurring character during the 10-episode run of the second season.

Douglass would be a great addition to the show. The historic freedom fighter was born into slavery and later escaped from his owners in Maryland. He would eventually become one of the most revolutionary figures of the 19th century for his incisive anti-slavery writings and activism for the freedom of enslaved men, women and children.

According to EW.com, Douglass won’t be the only historical figure to make an appearance on Underground. Actress Aisha Hinds will portray Harriet Tubman, while Sadie Stratton will play Patty Cannon, a brutal slave trader.

Underground, which stars stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Alano Miller and Christopher Meloni, is currently in production, with the second season set to premiere on WGN America in early 2017.

Meanwhile, John Legend will appear on the cover of Gotham magazine's November issue. In his cover story, he talks about fatherhood, his foray into acting and his upcoming new album.
