It might surprise you to learn this, but New York State was once the hops growing capital of the United States. Now with new laws, more New Yorkers are starting to plant hops once again, and you can learn how too.

Cornell Cooperative Extension Hops Specialist Steve Miller will host a 'Hop Growing Workshop' on March 22, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Tally Ho restaurant in Richfield Springs.

Miller will teach attendees the importance of site selection, the costs of production, varieties of hops, pests and about the equipment used in harvesting and processing hops.

The fee for the workshop is $15 and includes lunch, after which there will be a question and answer session with Miller.

You can register for the workshop by sending a payment to CCE Herkimer County, 5657 State Route 5, Herkimer, NY 13350 by March 18. Seating is limited.

For more information on the Hop Growing Workshop, contact Bernie Armata, CCE executive director, at 866-7920.
