Central New York's Ride for Missing and Exploited Children is underway. The Ride for Missing Children would not exist if it weren't for the countless dedicated volunteers. It's because of their support and hard work that the event has become so successful. Of course we don't consider it 100% successful until every missing child is found.

"In 1995 a group of 7 men rode their bicycles from Utica to Washington DC in order to raise awareness about the plight of missing children and to bring a message of safety to the people they met along the way. They arrived on the capitol steps on May 25, the first National Missing Children's Day."

Since then, the ride has grown into a massive army of nearly 500 bicycle enthusiasts. This year, cyclists will be riding 100 miles and will be stopping at various schools along the way. They will be educating and informing others on the importance of safety and prevention. This ride has special meaning to many Central New Yorkers. The memory of the disappearance of Sarah Ann Wood is forever etched on our hearts.

“I was drawn to the ride because last year was the 20th anniversary of Sarah Ann Woods’ disappearance, and it really touched my soul,” participant Chris Cardello said.

This event also has a personal meaning for our contributor Just Jen. Her cousin was abducted when she was 4.  Fortunately, she was recovered two weeks later thanks in part to the diligence of law enforcement personnel and events (like this) that help promote public awareness and education.

"Just Jen" also had the privilege of performing a song on a missing children benefit album called: Among the Missing. The recording features a song from Michael McDonald, and another from country star Kathy Mattea. Jen sang a track called "Have You Seen Me?" The song paints a vocal picture of an abducted child encouraging others not to give up their search.  92% of adults have seen photos of missing children and there are over 2300 children missing each day. 1 in 7 of those children is recovered thanks in part to projects like this. "Just Jen" says: "Never stop believing."
