A Utica man was gunned down at around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday night outside of Mahanna's Market on Whitesboro Street, according to Utica Police.

The victim, John Spratt, was shot several times, and was later found inside of a hallway next to the store, police said.

Officials say investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting. No arrests have been made.

The scene grew even more chaotic as a large crowd gathered and began throwing bottles at officers who were investigating and securing the scene. Other agencies, including the Oneida County Sheriff's and State Police, were called to help control the crowd.
