Michigan Mom Leaves 5 Children Unattended to Visit Boyfriend in Jail

29-year-old Jessica Abernathy from Lawrence, Michigan, has been charged with child endangerment after she left 5 children unattended while she visited her boyfriend in the Van Buren County jail.
The children who ranged in age from 9-3 were left in a 1994 Mazda Navajo while Abernathy allegedly spent 45 minutes with her jailed boyfriend. From the sheriff’s news release:
Deputies were able to find that the children had been left in the car alone for nearly 45 minutes. Further investigation discovered that Abernathy had also requested a second visit with her boyfriend which would have left the children unattended for at least another 30 minutes. Abernathy was directed out of the jail by corrections officers to the parking lot where she parked and left her kids. Abernathy advised officers that a friend was suppose[d] to pick up her children in the parking lot, and she thought the friend showed up so she left the kids. The friend in fact never showed up. Child protective services was immediately notified and an investigation started by that office.
