New York, NY (WIBX) - After pledging to forge ahead with the New York City Marathon despite ongoing power outages and flooding from Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has now decided to call it off.

Bloomberg received heavy criticism for deciding not to the cancel the race, but late Friday afternoon, public outcry apparently changed his mind, leading to its cancellation.

Among those who supported Bloomberg's original call to race-on was ex-mayor Rudy Guiliani who said, 'To take this terrible, terrible tragedy and to come out of it stronger, the Mayor is doing exactly the right thing, taking this step and moving really strong in the right direction."

The race was scheduled for Sunday.
