New York State Split in Half By Closure of Tappan Zee Bridge Due to Hurricane Sandy – NYC Bridges to Close As Well [UPDATE]

A vital transportation route in New York State has been closed by Hurricane Sandy. The Tappan Zee Bridge, which carries the New York State Thruway over the Hudson River has closed to all traffic.
Updated 4:50PM: All Bridges in New York City, execpt those in Staten Island will be closed at 7PM Monday night.
Governor Andrew Cuomo released a statement:
“Hurricane Sandy has created conditions that make it hazardous for motorists to use the Tappan Zee, and that is why we are closing the bridge,” said Governor Cuomo. “We are sensitive to the impact this will have on travelers, but safety is our highest priority and, under current conditions, gusts sweeping across the bridge could flip vehicles or cause serious multi-vehicle accidents.”
There is an immediate ban on all trucks, buses, motorcycles on the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Although the bridge structure is safe and not in danger of failure or collapse, the bridge will remain closed until conditions indicate that it is again safe for traffic.
