Charging that they sold cars outfitted with illegal "defeat devices" to beat emissions tests, New York's Attorney General announced today that the state is suing the German automaker.  The AG also said that VW attempted to cover-up it's actions.

The New York complaint says the company made it more difficult to clean up the state's air to levels that protect public health.  The Albany Times Union reports that the state is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

In a statement made in New York City, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said "Consumers were defrauded, the environment was damaged."  Massachusetts and Maryland have also filed lawsuits of their own against Volkswagen.
