Coming up on August 21st 2017, there will be a Total Solar Eclipse visible here in the United States. Will this event be visible to Central New York and the rest of the state?

The path of the total eclipse will pass a few hundred miles south west of New York with Carbondale, Illinois being the location of the longest duration eclipse at 2 minutes and 41 seconds.

Here in New York, it looks like we will see between 70% - 80% of the total solar eclipse. In Central New York, we will see approximately 72%. The best time to watch is 2:40PM on August 21st.

Remember though, it isn't safe to observe a partial eclipse like New York will see without protecting your eyes. NASA has this to say:

The only time that the Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye is during a total eclipse, when the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun. It is never safe to look at a partial or annular eclipse, or the partial phases of a total solar eclipse, without the proper equipment and techniques. Even when 99% of the Sun’s surface (the photosphere) is obscured during the partial phases of a solar eclipse, the remaining crescent Sun is still intense enough to cause a retinal burn, even though illumination levels are comparable to twilight.
