It was a joke, I think, when the town of Proctor near Duluth, Minnesota debated a resolution calling for an NFL team to relocate to the frigid city at the western tip of Lake Superior. But if Duluth can ask for an NFL team, why can't Utica?

There are rumors swirling that several teams may be considering relocation (or re-relocating) to Los Angeles including the Rams, Chargers and Raiders.

Duluthians (if that is how one refers to residents of Duluth) can't be blamed for thinking the NFL might move a franchise there. Green Bay, the smallest city in the league, has about 104,000 people while Duluth has about 86,000.

Looking back at the history of the NFL, this is a league that at one time fielded teams in Muncie, Indiana (population 70,000) and Portsmouth, Ohio (population 20,000). The Portsmouth Spartans, by the way, are still competing in the league. You just know them as the Detroit Lions.

So what about Utica? At 62,000 people strong (and about 296,000 if you add together the metro area), population-wise, we could claim an NFL team, right? After all, what does Jacksonville have that we don't?

With as much fervor the Comets has elicited from Uticans, imagine the draw for an NFL team.

Hey if Duluth can pipedream, so can we.
