The U-Pick apple season at North Star Orchards in Westmoreland is a no pick season. And Mother Nature is to blame.

A notice on the North Star Orchard website says a Spring frost destroyed most of the crop.

"Unfortunately Mother Nature was not kind this season. Our orchards were hit with an April frost that eliminated most of our apple crop.  We will not be offering u-pick apples this year. Hopefully next season will be better."

Jim Allen, President of the New York Apple Association predicted crops to be smaller and more scarce this year. Allen says a late Spring frost caused many apple growers to lose a percentage of their crop. Drought conditions in parts of the region will also cause apples to be smaller in size.

Fresh apples from Western New York will still be available at North Star Orchards and the U-Pick pumpkins will be begin in October.
