It’s not uncommon for bestselling novels to make their way to the big screen — but Stieg Larsson’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ has seen not just one movie adaptation, but two.

Lisbeth Salander, the iconic tough-as-nails computer hacker from the book, has now been embodied by two gorgeous actresses: Noomi Rapace, who starred in the 2009 Swedish-language film, and Rooney Mara, who shares top billing with Daniel Craig in the recently-released English version.

That got us thinking: which lady will use this high-profile to launch the more successful career?

NOOMI RAPACE

The 32-year-old Swedish actress portrayed Lisbeth in the foreign movie adaptations of all three of the books in Larsson’s millennium series — ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’ and ‘The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest’ — and so beloved was her work that even US audiences wondered if the intensity behind them could be duplicated by an American actress.

Tinseltown insiders took notice, and Rapace got her first English-speaking role opposite Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.’ She’s also slated to appear in Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott’s next movie, ‘Prometheus.’

ROONEY MARA

Mara, 26, a New York native, first gained notice as the Harvard student who gave Mark Zuckerberg the kiss-off in ‘The Social Network’ and set off a chain of events that eventually led to the creation of Facebook. She appeared in the 2010 remake of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ — but besting A-listers like Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson to land the role of Lisbeth Salander is what’s known in the business as a “game-changer.”

Mara has received universal acclaim for her performance in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,’ with Entertainment Weekly calling her a “revelation,” and Variety declaring her “hypnotic and fearless.” Next up for Mara: starring alongside Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett in acclaimed director Terrence Malick’s new movie ‘Lawless’ — which is sure to be just one of many upcoming projects for the talented young actress.
