Should Utica Follow New York City's Tampon and Pad Proposal?

New York City may soon be offering free tampons and pads after lawmakers approved the idea. Should Utica, Syracuse, and Central New York consider the idea, as well?

First, it was the discussion on getting rid of taxes on tampons and pads (which is just waiting Gov. Andrew Cuomo's approval - And it is expected). Now, it's the idea of free tampons and pads for women.

This doesn't mean completely free. You wouldn't be able to walk into a grocery store and pick up a box of tampons and walk out, but this is a big step that could help a lot of people. The free tampons would be available in public schools, jails, and homeless shelters.

The New York City Mayor's administration supports the idea, but that doesn't mean it's in effect yet. According to ABC-7 Chicago,

It's unclear when the mayor will take up the measure, which would provide an estimated 2 million tampons and 3.5 million pads per year in shelters alone. Once dispensers are installed, it's expected to cost about $2.5 million annually in the city's $82 billion budget.

But $2.5 million out of an $82 BILLION budget isn't asking too much for something that is a necessity. Well, we don't think so at least.
