As heard on your information update with Jim Rondenelli this morning, the largest solar storm in five years is set to hit our planet today. The cloud of charged particles could potentially disrupt utility grids, airline flights, satellite networks and GPS services, especially in northern areas. The effects could linger though tomorrow morning.

The storm, which started with a massive solar flare early in the week, is part of the sun’s normal 11-year cycle, which is supposed to reach the peak of storminess next year. Solar storms can disrupt technology on Earth with magnetic, radio and radiation emissions, and all three types are expected to be strong in this particular storm, making it the strongest overall since December 2006.
