What started as a family photo shoot has exploded into a viral controversy. Is this picture of a navy sailor holding his newborn son in an American flag a beautifully artistic portrait or unpatriotic? Depends on who you ask.

Photographer Vanessa Hicks, who served in the Navy posted the picture on her Facebook page and the negative comments came rolling in. "They said I should be ashamed to be a veteran, my husband should be ashamed to be married to me and that it was disgusting," she tells NY Daily News.

A Facebook page titled "You Call Yourself A Photographer?" posted her photo with several negative comments but the page has since been deleted.

Since the photo has gone viral, Hicks has seen more positive feedback then negative. She tells the NY Daily News, "I've heard from people who have served in the military from all over the country offering support."

The Flag Code, which formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used according to USFlag.org:

•The flag should not be used as a drapery or for any decoration in general.
•The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

What are your thoughts? Is this a beautifully artistic portrait or an unpatriotic use of the American Flag?
