President Obama’s Reelection Campaign Selling Birth Certificate T-Shirts
May 19, 2011 7:53 AM President Obama’s re-election campaign has decided to make a profitable joke out of the relentless conspiracy theory that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. Last month the president released his long-firm birth certificate from Hawaii that had been long-sought by the birthers. The campaign website is now selling T-shirts that show Obama’s face on the front with the words, “Made in the USA,” and an image of the birth certificate on the back. The site is also selling birth certificate mugs.
In an email advertising the merchandise, Obama deputy campaign manager Julianna Smoot writes, “There’s really no way to make this stuff completely go away. The only thing we can do is laugh at it — and make sure as many other people as possible are in on the joke.” Although polls show a large percentage of people had their doubts erased after the birth certificate release, there is still a small percentage out there who think it’s fake.
