More than 3,000 Red Cross disaster workers, including more than two dozen volunteers from the Eastern New York Region, are supporting relief efforts following Hurricane Matthew.

More volunteers will be needed over the days and weeks ahead and the local Red Cross Chapter will be holding a one-day workshop to train  perspective disaster volunteers for deployment.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, October 13th from 8:30 to 5:00 at the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley Office on Genesee Street in Utica.

Volunteers must be willing and able to deploy for a minimum of 10 days beginning on Friday.  The Red Cross will cover all training and travel costs for individuals who are deployed.

“Hurricane Matthew is leaving widespread damage and significant needs for food, shelter and help in its wake,” said Gary Striar, regional CEO for the American Red Cross. “We’re very proud of the many volunteers from our region who are already on the ground, responding to this major disaster. We welcome anyone else in our community who has the time and desire to help to join us now.”
