When I moved away from the Mohawk Valley back in the 90's...I'm sure there were some Dan Dee Donut shops still sprinkled throughout the area.  They were some locations in Utica, one in Yorkville, and there were also Dan Dee Donut shops in Herkimer and Little Falls.  Where did they go?

Dan Dee was a locally-based company that had been around since the 1950's.  They focused on coffee and donuts, but I remember some of the stores selling the delicious tomato pies as well.  I believe most shops were open 24 hours a day.  I may be wrong, but I don't think they had drive-thru window service.

I can clearly remember their bright yellow boxes and the large signs with the smiling face under the donut-shaped hat.  You couldn't watch local TV or listen to the radio for long without seeing or hearing a Dan Dee Donuts commercial.

Someone told me that the original owners sold the company back in the late 1980's.  Apparently they began closing the individual shops over the course of the next several years and focused on backing bread.

While living in southern New England, I because used to seeing Dunkin Donuts shops on nearly every corner.  Not quite as many here in the Mohawk Valley, but certainly there are many more than the few Dan Dee Donut shops that once thrived in this area.
