Heckling a comedian isn’t always the best idea, since they 1) have a microphone and 2) are usually quick witted and have better jokes than you.

It’s asking for trouble and that’s just what an audience member did this past weekend at a Russell Brand show. He shouted “Katy Perry,” the name of Brand’s pop star ex-wife, and he paid for it, dearly.

A patron of Brand’s comedy show at the Borgata in Atlantic City shouted Perry’s name, and then “God save the queen” when Brand was discussing the royal family as a part of his routine.

That’s when Brand launched his retaliation. He asked for the house lights to come on so he could face his, uh, accuser. It appears that it was the overall heckling, as opposed to the mention of his ex-wife’s name, that pushed Brand to humiliate his disruptive taunter.

Video from the evening has circulated and it’s enough to make you blush, not because Brand spews obscenities but because he is so efficient and effective with his words and cuts this joker down to size.

“I want to see what this person looks like, turn the lights on for me because I really want to achieve some sort of confirmation. Let’s have a look …Come here, let’s see you,” Brand said.

The taunter was not quick to own to his actions, so the rest of the crowd did it for him, pointing him out and exposing him.

“Let’s see how your mental illness looks in the daylight,” Brand taunted. He continued, “It’s you, is it? Oh, dear. I was hoping that your personality was just a result of physical beauty. But then I saw you. I thought, ‘This guy’s confident, probably, because he’s incredibly handsome,’ but look at you. You look like somebody who’s fallen off the outside of a church. And what is it that you have rattling around your mind, some bizarre combination of alcohol and idiocy… some cocktail of nothing. And yet the confidence to continue shouting. They say of course, don’t they, that empty vessels make the most noise. What an enormous echo of nothingness from you.”

Brand really let him have it, saying, “I think silence is your friend. I think keep your lips firmly, firmly clamped together. Because everything that comes out of your mouth, from your idiotic announcements to your disgusting halitosis that’s coming through this room, is an abomination.”

Ouch.
