A group of guys headed into the desert to create a scale model of our solar system. To create this model, it took seven miles to make it to the correct scale!

The solar system is HUGE - we all know that, but to actually build a correct scale model of it... Well, it's a lot bigger than you probably have thought. There's a lot of pictures online (and in books) of the solar system, but it would be impossible to create a scale model because we wouldn't actually be able to see Earth on the pages - it would be too small.

So a group of friends headed into the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to create this scale model of our solar system - with Earth being the size of a marble. With that scale, the team needed seven miles of space to make the model correct!

The video is a little long, yes - But it's worth every minute. To watch what this group created, and what they were able to show us... it's just absolutely amazing.

To Scale: The Solar SystemOn a dry lakebed in Nevada, a group of friends build the first scale model of the solar system with complete planetary orbits: a true illustration of our place in the universe.

It really puts things into perspective - Our solar system is SO huge, and Earth is just a small part of. We really are just a speck of dust in our solar system, and our solar system is just a speck of dust in the entire universe.
