It's been nearly three years since Selena Gomez graced fans with an album, but according to the pop star, there's an understandable reason for the delay.

Gomez opened up to Beats 1 host Zane Lowe in a new interview, where she explained that she's been "terrified" to release her third solo studio album following the success of Revival.

"I was really happy with Revival but at the same time I was terrified of doing another record, because for me it could [have been] a step down," the pop singer divulged.

"I needed to beat that record and I think every artist kind of struggles with that. So I waited. I wanted it to be great and had I not waited a good year or two, I wouldn't have had the best songs I've ever had," she continued.

Gomez, who's been in the studio with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, also said she has "so many" songs she's recorded for the new album over the past two years, even though she has yet to narrow down the track list.

"Yes, I am finishing up the album, but we're also trying to figure out a fun way to take our time," she said. "There's no date there's no idea for it but I have a lot of music that I've collectively put away."
