We’ve less than a month before ‘Sherlock‘ Holmes makes his dramatic return (at least in the UK), but the game is officially on! The BBC has released a new full-length trailer for the great detective’s long-awaited third season, as well as exclusive content and clips for us to investigate on our own!
The full-length trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch‘s return as the legendary detective highlights the toll his resurrection will take on John Watson (Martin Freeman), who keeps up nights in anger for his friend’s two-year absence. Sherlock jokes with his brother how best to break the news, but when Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) reveals that John has moved on with his life, Sherlock can only reason, “What life? I’ve been away.”
More than just the trailer, however, the BBC has created an interactive version of the spot that allows viewers to click certain “hotspots” within the footage, in order to view photos of the third season, as well as a few select clips from January 1 premiere “The Empty Hearse.” John’s new ladyfriend Mary (Freeman’s own real-life partner Amanda Abbington) certainly takes a large presence in the footage, but could she and Sherlock work together when a terrorist attack threatens London, and possibly John himself?
So reads the synopsis of season 3 premiere “The Empty Hearse”:
Two years after the devastating events of ‘The Reichenbach Fall’, John appears to have got on with his life. New horizons and romance beckon. But, with London under threat of a devastating terrorist attack, Sherlock is about to take John at his word, staging his resurrection with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it, though, he’s in for a very big surprise…
Meanwhile, in addition to the footage screened and details gleaned at Comic-Con, we most recently learned of season 3 that Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen (brother to ‘Hannibal”s Mads Mikkelsen) has joined in the villainous role of “Charles Augustus Magnussen,” a character with no direct literary counterpart, but who likely corresponds to the 1904 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton.”
Follow-up episode “The Sign of Three” will feature an oft-discussed wedding, while “The Last Vow” will air on February 2. The BBC has yet to commission an official ‘Sherlock’ season 4, though reportedly Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have both signed on for the follow-up, in spite of their increasingly busy schedules.
What are you waiting for? Check out the full-length trailer above, and keep going to the interactive version for clips of the premiere! Tell us in the comments how you think John will take the news of the great ‘Sherlock”s return!
