Global studies. English literature. Typical college courses. Miley Cyrus? Not your typical college course. Skidmore College in Saratoga, NY is offering a course on Miley Cyrus.  No joke.

Will this class teach you the art of twerking?  Nope.  The class is called "The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media."  The course will be taught by Professor Chernoff.  Why study Cyrus?  Chernoff thinks she's relevant on many levels.

I created it as a creative and rigorous way of looking at what's relevant about sociology and sociology theory.  Miley Cyrus is a surprisingly complicated cultural moment.

According to US Weekly, this is how the class on Cyrus is described.

From Disney tween to twerking machine, Miley Cyrus has grown up in the public eye, trying on and discarding very different identities onscreen and off.

She provides rich examples for analyzing aspects of intersectional identities and media representation.

What do you think of Miley Cyrus as a college course?  Bet they won't have any problems getting students to sign up for this class.  It's also more free publicity for Cyrus, which I'm sure she's happy about.

Beyonce has also been the subject of a college course.  Details here.
