Don't take selfies!  The DMV today issued that warning to drivers here in New York State today.

The DMV executive director reminded drivers that new distractions are making driving more dangerous.  Terri Egan told the Albany Times Union, "Smartphones can provide nearly limitless entertainment, but activities like taking selfies while driving are just irresponsible. Whether it's answering a short text, making a quick call, taking a photo, or catching Pokémon, it can wait."

Under state law, the use of mobile phones and other portable electronic devices while a vehicle is in motion is punishable by fines and driver's license points.  The maximum fine for a first offense is $200.  It can also cost you 5 points on your license.  Eleven points compiled over an 18-month period can result in license suspension.

Hands-free cellphone use and use of phones that are attached to the vehicle's surface are allowed.
