In a year of increasingly traumatic and shocking celebrity breakups (et tu, Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney!?!), it's encouraging to see love hasn't completely rendered itself null and void just yet. Pippa Middleton, sister to Duchess Kate, is engaged.

Pippa confirmed the engagement to her boyfriend of a year, hedge fund multi-millionaire James Matthews, in a statement released earlier today (July 19). James reportedly got down on one knee to pop the question (tradition!!!!) during a trip to the Lake District this past weekend, according to the BBC.

"Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr. James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17 and plan to marry next year,” they said in their statement, via PEOPLE.

The proposal was reportedly a huge surprise to Pippa, as well as the couple’s friends and family. Not not even her big sis, Kate, had a clue James was gearing up to propose.

It was “totally unexpected. She had no idea they were getting engaged so soon,” a source reportedly told US Weekly.

“They make a wonderful couple and we wish them every happiness together,” said Pippa’s father Michael Middleton in a statement.

Pippa and James first linked up back in 2012, but they broke up shortly after, leading Pippa to date Nico Jackson for three years. Three months after they split, Pippa and James were seen together while on vacation in St. Barts, according to PEOPLE.
