The King's Speech and The Fighter were the big winners of the night in the film categories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, while Boardwalk Empire took home the most prominent honors on the television side. My friend from New England says The Fighter with Mark Walberg is a great film and I'm looking forward to seeing it. Christian Bale and Melissa Leo swept the supporting honors for their roles in The Fighter.
The show opened with a win for Steve Buscemi as best actor for his role on the freshman HBO series, Boardwalk Empire. The cast was later named best drama ensemble. The cast of Modern Family (a show I must see) won top honors in the comedy category, while Alec Baldwin and Julianna Margulies repeated as award winners for their roles in 30 Rock and The Good Wife.
The biggest surprise of the night -- both for her and the audience -- was Betty White's award for best actress in a TV comedy. The 89-year-old, who was honored here with the Lifetime Achievement Award last year, beat out the likes of Tina Fey and Jane Lynch for her performance on Hot In Cleveland.
Betty White's genuine shock over her win -- and the audience's standing ovation -- was definitely the feel good moment of the night.
