‘Divergent’ Review

Springing forth from the same lineage of Katniss Everdeen, far removed from the toxically weak Bella Swan bloodline, ‘Divergent’ heroine Beatrice “Tris” Prior is well worth rooting for, even if her debut film isn’t as compelling as its leading lady. Based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA trilogy, Neil Burger’s film is cripplingly faithful to its source material, and although he and screenwriters Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor have plenty of rich material to pull from, the film’s inability to distill it down to its most essential bits makes for a strangely bloated and often flatlining final product.

Yet, for its dragging run time – nearly two and a half hours – and its repetitive nature, ‘Divergent’ should both thrill fans and (hopefully) excite newcomers who will leave the theater wanting to know where its open ending travels next.

‘Jem and the Holograms’ Is Getting a New Movie From One Very Weird Team

Of all the potential movie directors Jon M. Chu and producer Jason Blum could collaborate on, a live-action update on 'Jem and the Holograms' is literally the last thing we would have expected. The director of 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' and the producer of the 'Paranormal Activity' series are teaming up to adapt the '80s cartoon series/toy line for the modern age, and we couldn't be more baffled if we tried.

New ‘Captain America 2′ Preview Shows Off Anthony Mackie as The Falcon

We were sold on 'Captain America 2' before the new featurette arrived and got us pumped to see Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, in action. Despite being used in the trailers and getting a character poster or two, we had yet to fully understand what purpose he would serve in the film ... until now.

‘Endless Love’ Review

Often felt in the hormone-fueled heydays of youth, first love can be a frenzy of overwhelming passion and dizzying lust. So of course it's a sensational jumping off point for drama. Add in a dash of deep parental disapproval, and you've got the stuff of Shakespeare. Sadly, while the new movie 'Endless Love' has the premise for great romantic drama, it lacks the conviction and execution, coming up boring where it should be bold.

‘Vampire Academy’ Review

Based on the bestselling YA book series, 'Vampire Academy' seemed a promising movie adaptation. Combining the cutthroat world of high school with the bloodlust of vampire fiction, it had an enticing starting point. Adding to its allure were a writer and director who have defined the modern teen queen movie, Daniel Waters, the screenwriter of 'Heathers,' and Mark Waters, the director of 'Mean Girls.' So how did the 'Vampire Academy' turn out so lifeless?

‘Pitch Perfect 2′ is Bringing Back Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson

When 'Pitch Perfect 2' was greenlit, it was assumed -- or at least hoped for -- that stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson would return. The former led the first film, while the latter was its breakout performer. And if you're a fan of 'Pitch Perfect' you'll be happy to know that both are coming back for the sequel.

POLL: Are Movie Previews in Theaters Too Long?

Some say one of the best parts about going to the movie theater is seeing all the previews that screen beforehand, but for many, including the National Association of Theater Owners, this is too much of a drawn-out experience. The organization recently released a list of voluntary demands to movie studios calling primarily for shorter movie trailers to screen in front of titles, but do you think trailers are too long to begin with?

‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ Movie Nabs a Director and Writing Duo

We've known about the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' movie for a while now, but we still have no idea what the heck this movie is going to be about. How do you adapt a series of completely unconnected interactive kids' books for the big screen? That's the big question, and, as of this moment, it remains unanswered. However, the film has hired writers and a director, whose past works give us a glimpse of the tone we can expect from the project.

New Movies: ‘Devil’s Due,’ ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,’ ‘The Nut Job,’ ‘Ride Along’

Oscar nominations came out Thursday morning, with films like 'American Hustle' and '12 Years a Slave' leading the way. You can probably bet that none of this weekend's new releases will figure into next year's Oscars, but that doesn't mean there won't be something you like. The four films opening wide on Friday cover a wide range of genres and styles, a little something for everyone.
