I first heard of this phenomenon in the 1980s, the government paying outrageous prices for things. In the 90's it seemed to taper off but, it looks like the era of the Defense Departments 436 dollar hammer lives on in Washington DC. A newly released report accuses the Justice Department of spending $16 on muffins served at a Washington legal conference in 2009. Yep, 16 dollars a piece!
