That Facebook Class Action Lawsuit Settlement Email You Got Recently Was… Legit?

That’s right… If you recently got an email you thought was SPAM naming Facebook in a class action lawsuit over ‘Sponsored Story’ ads, this time the email was actually real, so don’t delete it and if you have (like me), go into your trash bin and undelete it! A simple seamstress named Angel Fraley kicked it off and the lawsuit was settled for $20 million! Want a piece?

The good news, if you apply there is a good chance that you will see a payout… But before you get dollar signs in your eyes, the bad news is since Facebook has almost 165 million users, you’ll probably only get pocket change after all is said and done. Even if only 3 million of those people claim, they’ll receive less than a $5 bill a piece after lawyer fees and basic division… bleh! So, it all depends on how many people file, here’s to like only a couple of people taking this seriously (i/e: YOU) but if  a lot of people do, in all liklihood that money will be split among some non-profit organizations. I guess I’m cool with that, but man I got all excited for a second!! I always thought these things were b/s… To quote the NYS Lottery, “Hey, you never know.” Here’s what the email should’ve looked like so compare this screenshot to your email and if it matches, good luck!

But even if you don’t get paid, there is an upside from the settlement. Facebook has to give all users “additional information about and control over the use of their names and profile pictures in Sponsored Stories.” Maybe that means Facebook will give you a better way to control this than currently exists.
