The $640 Toilet Seat Lives On In Washington DC [OPINION]
I first heard of this phenomenon in the 1980s, the government paying outrageous prices for things. In the 90′s it seemed to taper off but, it looks like the era of the Defense Departments 436 dollar hammer lives on in Washington DC. A newly released report accuses the Justice Department of spending $16 on muffins served at a Washington legal conference in 2009. Yep, 16 dollars a piece! It must have real gold sprinkles on it, but wait, there’s more.

The department is also accused of paying nearly ten dollars each for cookies and brownies and 32 dollars per person on snacks of popcorn and candy bars at another conference. The document says the DOJ poured nearly 600 thousand dollars of taxpayer money into event planning services for five conferences. Wow, and we wonder why Americans are cynical about government.
