It was on this date in 1938 that the Thousand Island Bridge in Upstate New York's Jefferson County was dedicated.  The bridge opened to traffic the year before but today is the anniversary of a dedication ceremony featuring President Franklin Roosevelt, the former governor of New York State.

The international border crossing at the 1000 Islands is actually a series of bridges connecting the US mainland near Alexandria Bay to New York's Wellsley Island, Canada's Hill Island and finally the Canadian Mainland.

A toll is paid to leave the US mainland northbound, yet there are a few exits left in the United States past the toll leading to Wellsley Island communities like Fineview and DeWolf Point.

The Thousand Island Bridge is another spectacular drive in Upstate New York and worth the detour if you're visiting the resort communities of Clayton, Cape Vincent or Alexandria Bay.
