The cold weather will be here before you know it, and just like humans, our pets can get terribly uncomfortable too. Here's some cold-weather tips for your pets.

The dry, cold air in wintertime along with chemicals from ice-melting substances can be a serious pain for dogs and cats, especially if they lick it off their paws.

1. Coming in and out of the house can dry out your pet's skin, making it itchy and flaky. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as they come inside. Pay special attention to between the toes. Remove any snow.

2. Never shave your dog down to the skin in the winter. Their coats keep them warm and dry.

3. Wash and dry your pet's feet and stomach after long winter walks to get rid of chemicals from ice-melt. Always check fro cracks in the pads and redness.

4. You can also put petroleum jelly or booties on their feet before taking a walk to protect from salt and chemicals.

5. It may sound strange, but bathe your pets as little as possible during the winter months. Too many baths can strip natural oils from the animal's skin, causing it to be dry and flaky. Your vet can recommend a moisturizing shampoo if bathing often is a must.

6. Just like humans, pets expend energy trying to keep warm. Don't be afraid to add a little extra food to their diet for more calories. Always keep water in the dish for hydration too.

7. Finally, always keep a nice warm place for your pet to sleep that is away from drafts and up off the floor as much as possible.

Remember if you're cold, your pets are too.
